Julian Casablancas is the singer, and songwriter in the band, The Strokes. In between albums, Julian put out a solo album called Phrazes for the Young. He is one of my favorite people in music, mostly because The Strokes are my favorite band. The music on his solo album is like alternative, rock, electronica, and new wave. Some of this album winds up being too weird to appeal to me, but some of the songs are right in between and wind up sounding amazing. If you’re not quite sure who The Strokes are, don’t worry, you probably still know Julian Casablancas. If you’re like me, and you watched Saturday Night Live before it started getting horrible, then you might know the song Boombox. Well there are two people in that video who sing, Andy Samberg, and the other guy is Julian Casablancas. Now that you hopefully know who he is, we can move on. It is pretty simple how I learned about Julian Casablancas, I listened to The Strokes a lot, and soon enough I listened to Julian’s solo work. The first solo song I had heard by him was 11th Dimension, which is still one of my favorite songs by him.
The thing I love most about Julian Casablancas is that he is awesome. The thing I love most about his music is that there is so much different stuff going on in the background. His music is so creative and well put together. When I listen to it I’m just amazed, he doesn’t play the same beat the whole time, and he changes keys constantly. There are four songs by Julian that stand out for me, 11th Dimension, Glass, Out of the Blue, and I’ll Try Anything Once. 11th Dimension is a very happy song to listen to for me. The rhythm seems so happy, and you can tell by the way that he’s singing that he’s happy too. When I listen to this song I feel confident, and happy. This song is a good example of when there is so much going on in the background. I also like the little techno solos there are in it. Glass doesn’t really make me feel like anything, it’s just fun to listen to. This song also is an example of when there is a lot going on, and when the beat doesn’t stay the same the whole song. The song Out of the Blue starts off with a little beat, it almost reminds me of rain drops. Then it goes into something completely different which I love. It’s almost like energetic, and like he can’t keep doing the same thing because it’s boring. Julian makes a stab at songwriters, and basically says that all they ever do is tell how they’re feeling at different times. This is pretty cool because he includes himself with them. I’ll Try Anything Once is actually just the B side of You Only Live Once, which is a song by The Strokes. This just means is that it is played in a different key. I like this version of the song more than I like the actual song, just because it sounds good to me. I like it because it just kind of says you could do this, or do this. It’s not a complicated song at all it just gets to the point. Julian shows his views basically, and I like when songwriters do that. I’m not sure which of these songs is my favorite, I love them all. Sometimes I’d rather listen to one or the other, but then I realize they’re all good. There is something I love about Julian’s voice so much I’m not sure what it is, but it just comes off so appealing to me. Sometimes it seems like he doesn’t have that much range, but then you listen some more and realize that his voice is truly tremendous. This is all why Julian Casablancas is one of my favorite songwriters. Whether it is for The Strokes, or his solo work, he is always able to write amazing songs with originality.
